Managing toothache and

Dental Emergencies

The Dental Council of New Zealand have instructed practices to only see urgent dental treatment which cannot be managed at home. The following guidance is to support you in managing minor symptoms and to reduce the risk of virus transmission to you, our staff and patients.
If you or a family member has toothache or an injury to your teeth or gums, get help as soon as possible.

You need urgent dental advice if you have:

  • Facial swelling extending to eye, neck, or floor of mouth
  • Bleeding following an extraction or due to trauma which does not stop after 20 mins of firm pressure with gauze
  • Severely broken tooth/teeth due to accident
  • Toothache that is preventing sleeping combined with swelling or fever, which is not manageable with painkillers

If you have any of these please call us and leave a message on 06 878 8171

You need to go to the A&E if you have:

  • Facial swelling affecting your vision, breathing, or preventing mouth opening
  • Trauma causing loss of consciousness, double vision, or vomiting
  • Severe or continuous bleeding

Management at home

  • For toothache pain, over the counter painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen will help symptoms
  • If you have extreme sensitivity to hot or cold, rub desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne or Colgate Pro-Relief directly on the affected area and don’t rinse afterwards. Do this several times a day
  • Wisdom tooth pain can be managed with regular mouthwashes using warm salt water or Savacol, combined with painkillers and thorough cleaning of the area
  • If you have trouble swallowing or have swelling of your cheek you may need antibiotics. Please call us.

The following are not dental emergencies

  • Loose or lost crowns, bridges or veneers
  • Broken, rubbing or loose dentures causing ulcers
  • Bleeding gums
  • Broken, loose or lost fillings
  • Chipped teeth with no pain
  • Loose orthodontic wires

Please delay any of the above until we re-open. Take care and stay safe, from the team at Aesthetic Dental.
